Alianza Lima's Purple Jersey

Posted by John Hickey on

Alianza Lima undoubtedly has one of the most unique jersey traditions on the planet. Every month of October the Peruvian club substitutes its tradition blue and white vertically stripped jersey for the a purple one in homage to the Lord of Miracles, the club's patron.

The gesture is simple, but the story behind how the tradition began makes it even more interesting. There are conflicting stories, but the most widely accepted version states that in October of 1971 the equipment manager Jose Carrion, who was a devout catholic, ordered purple jerseys to honor the Lord of Miracles without letting anyone know.

When the Alianza Lima players entered the field in a derby against Sporting Cristal, everyone was in shock at the colors being worn Alianza. Purple jersey, purple shorts, and purple socks. Keep in mind that in 1970's third or fourth alternate jerseys that are common today basically did not exist. The club president was furious and decided to fire Carrion on the spot, claiming that he had committed an act of terrorism against the clubs history.

In a huge turn of events, Alianza Lima won the derby 2-0 and the president, happier and calmer after the result, decided to hire back Jose Carrion and instate the purple jersey during the month of October as an official club tradition.
